Feral Domestic Companion Text
Feral Domestic by Dani and Sheilah ReStack is a FAB (Film Art Book) published by the Visual Studies Workshop Press. It compiles drawings, writings, and images in dialogue with the artists’ trilogy of videos—Strangely Ordinary This Devotion; Come Coyote, and Future From Inside—made over the past 7 years. Divided into 3 sections named for each of the videos, Feral Domestic expands on themes of the domestic as a place of invention and unexpected catalyst toward fantasy; collaboration as a way of surviving within a world that often feels broken; and resistance to patriarchal structures of maternity, love, lesbian desire, and labor. Included at the end of each chapter are the artists’ responses to friends who asked them questions about the process of making the videos. Loosely based on a narrative about lesbian witches from Ohio who use magic to create children who can survive without water, the works feature both staged and documentary material from the artists’ relationship to planetary and personal survival in the age of climate change.
